Top Five ... Day Two
Hi Gang,
I’m back π
Did you ever doubt it?
So let’s get straight into it. Day two of my Top Five is:
Non-Christmas Christmas Songs
To clarify, songs that are usually played over the festive period or that remind me of Christmas, but actually have nothing to do with Christmas, Winter, Snow or anything else remotely seasonal.
- East 17 - Stay Another Day
Despite being the Christmas number one single way back in 1994, This Christmas classic actually has nothing to do with Christmas at all. At least the fake snow, parka coats and brooding looks of the band in the music video brings a little festive feeling.
2. S Club 7 - Never Had A Dream Come True
With memories of my Christmas school discos and the music video full of snow covered mountains on the fake backdrop and fur coats, you’d forgive me for forgetting this was actually the Children in Need single back is 2000. Hitting number one in early December that year it was knocked off the top spot by Eminem’s Stan, who in turn lost the converted Xmas No1 stop too ... Bob the Builder. Guys, what were we thinking??
3. Van Morrison - Someone Like You
Not sure what it is about this song that makes me feel like I’m sat next to a log burning fire with mulled wine whilst it’s cold and wintery outside. I feel like maybe that exact scene happened in a film that I can’t think of but, regardless, I’m a fan.
4. Dua Lipa - Golden Slumber
Without doubt Dua Lipa has won 2018!! She’s now queen of pop and her success has sent her across the globe. But last year she did this beautiful cover on a Beatles favourite and it hits all my festive spots!! The song in general is brilliant, whether you prefer the original, this the Elbow version, used for the John Lewis ad last year or Jennifer Hudson’s powerhouse version for the movie Sing.
5. Lily Allen - Somewhere Only We Know
Arguably the best of the John Lewis Christmas Adverts, Lily’s version of the Keane favourite has quickly become a festive favourite despite having nothing to do with Christmas time.
Notable Mentions:
Ellie Goulding - Your Song
Gabrielle Aplin - Power of Love
Kelly Clarkson - The Trouble With Love Is

Added simply because it was in the movie Love Actually, which is probably the only time I hear it.
Judy Garland - Somewhere Over the Rainbow
Eleanor Tomlinson - Hushabye Mountain
A recent find of mine. The song is the beautiful classic from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang but sounds so etherial and magical when sung by Eleanor. Her album only came out this year, after previously been best know for her acting roles. Whilst Poldark might but her biggest role to date, to me, she’ll always been Georgia’s BFF Jas, hating slaggy Lindsay in Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging!!
What do you guys think? Have I missed any glaringly obvious ones? Comment below.
Thanks for reading and Happy listening.
See you tomorrow
